The 7 Core Exercises Every Fighter Should Master

July 24, 2026

Ask any experienced fighter where real power comes from, and the answer is almost always the same: the core. Whether you're throwing knockout punches, defending a takedown, firing head kicks, or battling for position on the ground, your core is the engine that connects your upper and lower body.

Unfortunately, many athletes still rely on endless sit-ups and crunches in the hope of building a stronger midsection. While these exercises have their place, fighters need functional core strength that improves performance under pressure—not just six-pack abs.

Here are seven essential core exercises every fighter should include in their training.

1. Planks

The plank remains one of the most effective exercises for building total core endurance. It strengthens the abdominals, lower back, shoulders, and glutes while teaching your body to maintain a strong, stable position. This translates directly into better posture, improved striking mechanics, and greater resistance against opponents trying to break your balance.

Coach's Tip: Aim for perfect technique rather than chasing long hold times. Quality always beats quantity.

2. Side Planks

A fighter's obliques generate rotational power and help resist twisting forces during grappling exchanges. Side planks strengthen these muscles while improving hip stability and balance—qualities that are essential for striking and wrestling alike.

3. Hanging Leg Raises

This challenging movement develops lower abdominal strength, hip flexor power, grip endurance, and shoulder stability. Hanging leg raises also improve body control, making them particularly valuable for fighters who rely on explosive kicks, knees, and clinch work.

Keep the movement slow and controlled, avoiding the temptation to swing your body for momentum.

4. Medicine Ball Slams

Few exercises develop explosive power like medicine ball slams. Every repetition requires full-body coordination, allowing fighters to train rapid force production through the hips, torso, shoulders, and arms.

Because combat sports are explosive by nature, this exercise closely mimics the speed and aggression needed inside the ring or cage.

5. Russian Twists

Powerful hooks, elbows, and body shots all depend on rotational strength. Russian twists strengthen the obliques while improving rotational endurance, helping fighters maintain power throughout every round.

Focus on rotating your torso rather than simply moving your arms from side to side.

6. Ab Wheel Rollouts

Often underestimated, the ab wheel rollout is one of the toughest core exercises available. It builds exceptional anti-extension strength, forcing the entire core to brace while the body moves through a long range of motion.

This strength carries over into wrestling scrambles, submission defense, and maintaining posture during clinch exchanges.

7. Cable or Resistance Band Wood Chops

Wood chops closely replicate the rotational movement patterns used when throwing punches, kicks, knees, and even takedowns. By training the body to transfer force efficiently from the legs through the torso and into the arms, they help fighters produce faster, more powerful strikes.

Use controlled movements and concentrate on driving from the hips rather than relying solely on the arms.

Build a Fighter's Core—Not Just a Six-Pack

The best combat athletes don't train their core simply to look good—they train it to perform. A complete core routine should develop stability, rotation, anti-rotation, endurance, and explosive power. Together, these qualities improve striking power, grappling control, balance, injury resilience, and overall athletic performance.

Add these seven exercises to your weekly training program, perform them consistently with good technique, and you'll develop a stronger, more powerful foundation for every aspect of combat sports. When your core becomes stronger, every punch lands harder, every movement becomes more efficient, and your ability to dominate inside the ring, cage, or on the mats reaches a new level.
